MSS SP6 facing finish

Facing finish of steel flanges

Flange facing: the finish of contact faces of pipe flanges and connecting end flanges of fittings shall be judged by visual comparison with Ra standards, not by instruments having stylus tracers and electronic amplification. Other finishes may be supplied by agreement between user and manufacturer.

Raised face and large male and female: either a serrated concentric or serrated spiral finish having 24 to 40 grooves per inch shall be used. The cutting tool shall have a 125 microinch roughness.

Stock Finish

The most widely used gasket finish because it is suitable for ordinary service conditions. It is a continuous spiral groove. Flange sizes 12 inch and smaller are produced with a 1/16 inch round-nosed tool at a feed of 1/32 inch per revolution. Sizes 14 inch and larger are finished with a 1/8 inch round-nosed tool at a feed of 3/64 inch per revolution.

Spiral Serrated or Phonographic

This finish is produced by using a 90-degree included-angle V tool, making a spiral groove 1/64 inch deep and 1/32 inch apart.

Concentric Serrated

This finish is produced by using a 90-degree included-angle V tool, making concentric grooves 1/64 inch deep and 1/32 inch apart.

Smooth Finish

This finish is produced by tool shapes, cutting speeds and feeds that leave no definite tool marks apparent to the naked eye.

Surface finish requirements

  1. Raised face, large male and female: either serrated-concentric or serrated-spiral finish with 30 to 55 grooves per inch. The cutting tool has an approximate 0.06 inch or larger radius; the resultant surface finish is about 500 microinch roughness.
  2. Tongue and groove, small male and female: gasket contact surface roughness does not exceed 125 microinch.
  3. Ring type joint: the inside wall surface of the gasket groove does not exceed 63 microinch roughness.
  4. Blind flanges: blind flanges need not be faced in the center when the raised center diameter is at least 1 inch smaller than the inside diameter of fittings of the corresponding pressure rating. If the center part is depressed, machining of the depressed center is not required when its diameter is not greater than the corresponding inside diameter.

Raised Face (RF)

Raised face is one of the most common flange sealing faces. Confirm RF height, pressure rating and gasket requirement when sending RFQ.

Flat Face (FF)

Flat face is often selected where the mating flange or equipment face requires full-face gasket contact.

Ring Type Joint (RTJ)

RTJ flanges use a machined groove and metal ring gasket for higher pressure sealing conditions.

Blind RF / FF Reference

Blind flanges and matching sealing faces should be confirmed together with pressure rating, material and gasket type.
